Lakeview, OR — Although the Challenger ladies started a bit sluggish, conceding a goal from a wonderfully taken shot well above the penalty box that sailed into the corner, Cascade did not give up. Jordynn Jones, Aubrey Hess, and Mae Ferreira showed great determination in the midfield area, where much of the battle took place. At times the centerfield was so clustered you'd think Lakeview had extra players on the field, yet somehow the girls controlled the game, found open feet and created opportunities. A ball from our midfielders was played out wide near the 12 minute mark that landed at Sienna Wilcox's feet whose effort was narrowly deflected by a full outstretched diving goalkeeper to win Cascade a corner. Merely 5 minutes later Emma Coats had a breakaway that was broken down by a rushing GK who slid in to take the ball from under her feet. Cascade looked threatening in the first half and solid defensively. A header clearance, with three Honkers around her, from our back post in the 20 minute mark by Amelia Vanlandingham, sent CCHS on a counter attack up the wing with Emma Coats breaking up line. Unfortunately we couldn't convert, in the first half and the Honkers scored two more times from incredible shots that both hit the post and banked into the net. (This is Coach J's writing from watching film) Although I wasn't at the game, I would hope that the Challenger ladies felt confident during this match. The cohesion on the field, aggression and determination to win balls and control the game was exceptional from every player. In the second half, the ball seemed to be in the Lakeview half a majority of the time and we threatened goal again and again, made crosses into the box over and over, and played strong. Even after going down 4-0, we continued to battle and scored two great goals. A well worked midfield possessional play starting with a won tackle by Taylor Folin, put the ball to Aubrey's feet, who continued it to Jordynn, who slotted it through to Angelica Arce that placed it right into the corner. 5 minutes later with the ball in Lakeview's penalty box for nearly 3 minutes, Jordynn Jones got another assist, finding Aubrey Hess at the top of the box who shot it corner net. Over the course of the next ten minutes, Lakeview looked scared. There was an energy and tenacity to the Challengers that was a joy to see. We should be really proud of these girls and how hard they battled, and it's moving us forward into our games ahead.
