The JSerra Girls Flag Football team battled the Corona del Mar Sea Kings down to the final play of an entertaining nonleague game on Monday, with the Sea Queens pulling out a 20-12 win at Corona del Mar High.
The Lions are now 9-2 on the season.
After falling behind 6-0 midway into the first half, the Lions tied the contest, when freshman quarterback Ava Van Heerde completed a pass to sophomore Avery Olson who sprinted down the sideline for a 39-yard touchdown.
Corona del Mar added a touchdown before the end of the half to take a 12-6 lead into the intermission.
The Lions narrowed the gap to eight points with just over eight minutes remaining, when senior Shea Gonzalez hauled in a 35-yard touchdown reception.
Gonzalez had a team-high five receptions for 73 yards.
JSerra had a final possession with under 30 seconds to go with a chance to tie with a touchdown and two-point conversion, but a Sea Queens interception sealed the win for Corona del Mar.
Van Heerde completed 17-of-28 for 170 yards.
Sophomore Dylan Sakayan had a team-best nine flag pulls on defense, while sophomore Kai Beary and senior Cora Finn each added seven flag pulls.
