The JSerra Girls Basketball team will compete for the tournament championship of the Villa Park-Portola Kickoff Classic, as the Lions defeated the El Dorado Golden Hawks 53-45 in the tournament semifinals on Friday at Portola High School in Irvine. It was a back and forth first half that saw the Lions trail the Golden Hawks by six points early in the second quarter, before closing the half on an 11-4 run to take a 23-22 lead at halftime. The Lions turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, and after leading 40-33 at the end of the third quarter, built the lead up to 13 points near the midway point of the final period. El Dorado trimmed JSerra’s advantage to seven points with just over a minute remaining, but sophomore Addie Nolan connected on a key jumper to push the lead back to nine and the Lions assumed control the rest of the way to seal the win. Nolan finished the game with a double-double, scoring 11 points and collecting 12 rebounds. Sophomore Vivian Grenald, who was held scoreless in the first half, came alive in the final two periods and led the team with 14 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots. Sophomore Shae Talleur scored nine points and had five rebounds, while sophomore Rosie Santos added eight points. JSerra is now 3-0 and will take on tournament co-host Villa Park for the title on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
