A gritty and resilient effort from the JSerra Girls Lacrosse team helped them make school history and move to the doorstep of playing for a CIF championship.
The Lions produced a stirring, come-from-behind, 7-6 victory over the Corona del Mar Sea Queens in a CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals game Saturday at Corona del Mar High.
It is the first time in school history that the Lions have advanced to the semifinals round, which will see them host Chaparral on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
Sophomore Kate Berkus and senior Olivia Leddy found the back of the net in first period to give the Lions a 2-1 lead after one period.
Corona del Mar scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead with 54.5 seconds left in the first half, but Leddy answered with the equalizer 11 seconds later and the game was tied 3-3 at halftime.
Junior Evelyn Devir gave JSerra a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but the Sea Kings once again reclaimed the lead with two consecutive goals.
Berkus knotted the game at 5-5 late in the period with a goal off a free position, and with less than five seconds remaining in the period, junior Mary O’Hara's free position goal put the Lions ahead for good.
Senior Caitlin Quinn’s free position score pushed the Lions' advantage to 7-5 with 5:14 remaining.
Corona del Mar added a late goal with 50.4 seconds remaining to cut the deficit in half, but the Lions defense shut down the Sea Kings to preserve the triumph.
