Facing a seven-run deficit in the fifth inning, the JSerra Baseball team re-discovered its’ offensive prowess at just the right time to produce their most impressive win of the season, as the Lions rallied past the Santa Margarita Eagles 14-12 in a Trinity League thriller Wednesday at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. JSerra is now 12-7-1 on the season and 5-3 in Trinity League play. Santa Margarita, which shutout JSerra 6-0 in the first game of their series on Tuesday, jumped out to an 8-1 lead through four innings and appeared headed for another convincing triumph. After scoring one run over the first 11 innings in the series, the Lions’ offense erupted in the fifth inning. Senior Charlie Caruso walked with the bases loaded to start the barrage, which was followed by an RBI single from junior Jordan Marian and a sacrifice fly by senior Tyler Dunning. Junior Gavin Flores produced an RBI single with two outs, and after a walk to sophomore Marcus Greis, freshman Ryder Fredriksen doubled in two runs to cut the deficit to 8-7. Senior Dmitri Susidko fell behind 0-2 in his ensuing at-bat, but worked the count even, and then delivered a clutch, two-run single to right to give JSerra a 9-8 lead. Susidko had a team-high three hits and scored twice in the game. Marian, who went 2-for-4 in the game, connected on a two-run home run in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 11-8. Santa Margarita answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 11, but JSerra was not to be denied and returned the favor in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Blake Bowen smacked an RBI double to give the Lions a 12-11 lead, and after an intentional walk, Dunning capped a 2-for-4 day with a two-RBI double. The Eagles tallied a run in the home half of the inning, and got the winning run to the plate, but junior Thomas Gonzales capped his 1.2 innings in relief by getting the final out to close out the improbable win.
