Strong pitching and timely hitting was the formula that helped the JSerra Baseball team earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Carlsbad Lancers on Wednesday afternoon in Day 2 action at the Boras Baseball Classic at JSerra Catholic High School. JSerra has now won five out of six and improves to 9-6-1 on the season. Lions senior pitcher Matthew Champion tossed a complete game for the victory, scattering five hits and one earned run over seven innings, while striking out three. Champion threw 60 of his 83 pitches for strikes. The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as junior Noah Meza put down a well-placed bunt to the pitcher with the bases loaded that he beat out for an RBI single to score senior pitch runner William Schattmaier. Carlsbad tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a fielder choice groundout, but Champion escaped a bases loaded jam without further damage. Sophomore Blake Bowen started the game-deciding rally in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a groundout by junior Gavin Flores. Sophomore Takashi Rutherford then delivered the decisive swing of the game, smacking a 1-1 pitch into right field for an RBI single to score Bowen with the winning run.
