The JSerra Boys and Girls Cross Country teams enjoyed a standout day of individual and team brilliance at the Trinity League Finals on Friday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
On the girls’ side, the Lions flexed their collective muscle in impressive fashion by scoring five runners in the top seven.
The effort in front was spearheaded by senior Sophie Polay, who surged from third place and into the lead as the race headed into the second mile and pulled away for an impressive individual league title victory in a time 17:38.4.
Sophomore Reese Holley, junior Chloe Elbaz, and freshman Kaia Streadbeck finished third, fourth, fifth respectively, all crossing the finish line simultaneously in a time of 18:23.5.
Sophomore Hayden Kroger capped the scoring effort stepping across the finish line in seventh place in a time of 18:37.3.
Sophomore Hutton Nelligan (18:48.6) and junior Molly Hux (19:11.2) completed the Lions pack in the top 10 by finishing in eighth and 10th place.
JSerra defeated archrival Santa Margarita 20-41 points for the meet win.
The two teams will share the overall Trinity League title.
On the boys’ side, the Lions continued their preparation for a potentially historic postseason with another victorious outing.
The Lions’ effort was guided by seniors Bradley Arrey and Taye Newman, who pushed into the front of the race in the second mile and stayed there for the remainder of the competition.
Arrey accelerated across the finish line with the individual title in a time of 15:05.5, while Newman strode across the finish line in second with a time of 15:09.5.
The lead duo had stellar supporting help from juniors Luke Friedl (15:22.7) and Cole Carlson (15:25), who both moved up well in the back half of the race and finished in third and fourth place respectively.
Sophomore Zac O’Leary capped the Lions’ scoring group with a clocking of 15:51.4, which was good for 10th place.
JSerra defeated second place St. John Bosco by a score of 20-44 to win the team battle.
