It was a victorious home opener for the JSerra Girls Water Polo team, as the Lions defeated the La Jolla Vikings 14-6 in a nonleague game on Wednesday at JSerra Catholic High School.
La Jolla jumped out to a 4-2 lead early in the second period, but the Lions soon found their offensive rhythm and took control of the contest.
Junior Kamryn McCord, who scored the team’s first two goals, completed a first half hat trick with a man advantage goal to trim La Jolla’s lead to 4-3.
Junior Sloane Paulson tied the game at 4-4 with 3:57 left in the half with a lob shot over the head of the Vikings goalie off an assist from junior Sayre Duran.
The Lions took the lead for good with 1:24 left in the half, as following a penalty shot save by senior goalie Lola Birdsall, junior Gabby Elbaz lasered a shot into the far post corner of the goal.
McCord’s fourth goal of the half with 34 seconds left put the Lions up 6-4 at the intermission.
Sophomore Victoria Williams, senior Mary O’Hara, and senior goalie Lola Birdsall helped spearhead a stout defensive effort that kept the Vikings off the scoreboard in the third period.
Paulson’s second goal was the lone goal of the third period and gave the Lions a 7-4 lead.
JSerra broke the game open in the final seven minutes, with McCord striking twice in the first 1:36 of the period, and Elbaz adding her second score on a transition opportunity.
After senior Cam Bibeau tallied her lone goal to give JSerra an 11-4 lead, McCord put the finishing touches on her seven-goal performance with her final scoring strike with 2:33 remaining.
Senior Karissa Hughes and sophomore Vivian Haggard each added a goal apiece in the final 1:08 of the game.
