Newport Beach, CA — JSerra sunk the sailors today in our first ever varsity meeting;12 to 8! Pivotal sets were captured in round 2 [of 3] by Olivia McHenry... after winning her initial set in the opening round, Olivia hung in there to defeat the Sailors' line 1 singles in a tiebreaker 7-6 [7-3]!... and after dropping their opening set, Ana Ciraci with Kiley Davidson came from behind to secure another point in doubles to give the Lions an 8-4 lead going into round 3. Had these 2 sets not been victories, we are looking at a 6-6 tie going into round 3. Newport is a high - energy college-type program with a lot of pomp and showmanship....however, these two second victories literally removed the wind from their sails. leaving the Sailors in the proverbial doldrums and scrambling for the lifejackets! Sophie Moncur and Elise Early both swept their 3 singles sets, as Gabby Basa and Victoria Oh swept all 3 of their doubles sets. They will show up s MVP's of this match, as they should, but, those second round victories were the true iceberg. Delara Gitibin [A Newport Harbor transfer] and Olivia MORRIS competed very well together for the first time...
