Santa Barbara, CA — After a big win against the #20 The Master's in the GSAC Quarterfinal game, the Royals took on the #16 Oaks in the GSAC Semi-Final Game Friday night. The Royals increase their win streak to 7 straight games and their fourth top 25 upset in those games after defeating the Oaks 77-72. The Royals advance to the GSAC Championship game on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
After gaining a 7-4 lead over the Oaks in the first three minutes of the game, the momentum switched over to the Oaks as they got hot from behind the arc and went up 17-9. The Oaks continued to be consistent on offense as the Royals saw themselves at a twelve-point deficit early in the game. With nine minutes left in the first half, Kane Daniels (SR/Blythe, CA) hit back to back three-pointers to put the Royals within six points. The Royals and Oaks continued to battle in the first half and the Royals trailed 37-28 at halftime.
At the beginning of the second half, the Royals continued to attack as they trailed the Oaks by as much as ten points halfway through the second half. The game took a turn when the Royals went on a 9-0 scoring run with ten minutes left in the game to make it a one-possession game. The Oaks responded with two back to back three-pointers to go back up by eight points. The Royals eager to make another scoring run gave the ball to Michael Fry (SR/Inglewood, CA), who slammed two dunks in two straight possessions to give the Royals the extra energy they needed. With four minutes left in the game, the Royals took the lead but the Oaks gained it back after hitting a three-pointer with 1:19 left on the clock. With the game on the line, Keith Hunter (SR/Oakland, CA) converted a three-point play after being fouled on his shot to retake the lead for the Royals. Two free throws with 11.3 seconds remaining by Jonah Underwood (SR/San Jose, CA) would give the Royals a three-point lead and solidify the win for the Royals. After being fouled numerous times, the Royals would end up aking the game 77-72.
Michael Fry led the offense for the Royals with 17 points, while Keith Hunter and Kane Daniels each contributed 12 points of their own. The Royals will play the #4 seed Arizona Christian tomorrow at 7:30 pm for the championship.
