Ryan Zanelli throws five first-half TD passes in La Habra’s victory over Redlands East Valley
Redlands East Valley 7, La Habra 56
La Habra, CA — Transportation issues for Redlands East Valley delayed its matchup with La Habra 15 minutes on Friday night. But after a long drive from the Inland Empire it was the Highlanders’ big-play passing offense that ended up being the biggest issue of the evening for the Wildcats.
La Habra quarterback Ryan Zanelli didn’t throw a pass in the second half, but didn’t need to after a first-half performance that would be a career night for most, passing for 309 yards and five touchdowns in a lopsided 56-7 victory over REV.
Zanelli and his receiving corps, led by Kristopher Koontz and Brandon Vasquez, did most of their damage via deep crossing routes, scoring on touchdown passes of 66, 20, 76, 64, and 15 yards en route to a 42-7 halftime lead.
Leading 14-7 after the first quarter, the Highlanders scored 21 points over a span of 3 ½ minutes while needing only two offensive plays to pull away from REV.
Clark Phillips was able to get his hands on two errant passes from REV quarterback Jeramiah Donahue in the first quarter but was unable to haul them in. The much heralded Ohio State-commit made the most of his third chance, with a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown on the third play of the second quarter.
Zanelli did the rest for La Habra (2-0).
The Penn-bound senior quarterback, connected with Koontz for a 76-yard touchdown and Vasquez with a 64-yard score on consecutive plays. Both touchdowns occurred on the first play of each drive.
Zanelli completed the first-half scoring for the Highlanders with a second touchdown pass to Vasquez in the corner of the end zone with 27 seconds left before halftime.
A bright spot for REV (0-2) on a tough night was senior running back Daylan Acevedo, he rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown. Acevedo’s 5-yard run with 1:03 remaining in the first quarter pulled the Wildcats to within seven before the first-half scoring frenzy from La Habra commenced.
Malik Estero’s 1-yard run in the third quarter capitalized on a blocked punt and recovery by Noel Vallejo, pushing the La Habra lead to 42, and the fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
After opening the season unranked in the preseason CIF-SS Division 3 poll, La Habra zoomed to third in this week’s rankings after defeating Upland in Week 0. The Highlanders will have an opportunity to make a huge splash next week as their gaunlet through some of the bigger-name public schools in the area continues with a home game against Mission Viejo.
Prior to the game, La Habra honored the memory of long-time teacher and coach Frank Thompson. Thompson, who died in June, was a part of seven CIF championship teams as a member of the Highlanders’ coaching staff
