Vista, CA — The Vista Longhorns capped off the season with a resounding 40-8 victory over the Murrietta Valley Hawks on a quintessential fall day perfect for football.
The Horns took the opening kickoff and efficiently covered 63 yards in 8 plays, finishing with a 6-yard touchdown pass that left the Hawks unprepared.
With a new kicker, the Longhorns nailed the PAT, taking an early 8-0 lead, signaling the start of an offensive onslaught.
A Hawk fumble recovered by Vista led to a quick 42-yard drive in 3 plays, extending their lead to 14-0 by the middle of the first quarter.
Vista's defense, consistent in its excellence over the past 8 weeks, forced another Murrietta turnover, setting up an 81-yard drive in 5 plays for another touchdown. Despite the cool weather, the Longhorns were on fire, quickly advancing to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Longhorns' first three possessions all ended in touchdowns for the home team.
The score at halftime was 20-8, but the Longhorns' quest for points continued.
An uncharacteristic fumble by the Horns at the Murrietta 1-yard line, one of their few errors, turned into a nightmare for the Hawks as Vista's defense blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 26-8.
Following the next kickoff, Vista's defense scored again with a 68-yard interception return, increasing their lead to 34-8.
The Longhorns wrapped up their scoring with an 11-yard touchdown pass, solidifying a 40-8 lead and starting the celebrations.
The season's rollercoaster ride concluded with Vista demonstrating their prowess with a 6-4 record, proving themselves a formidable football team.
This is also the final report from your roving reporter. Covering the Longhorns this year has been a joy. Like all good things, this too must end, and I will be retiring alongside the Coach.
Both of us have enjoyed a wonderful journey over the past 39 years, him as coach and myself as his reporter. A humble pleasure I could have never envisioned so many years ago.
Thank you All.
