Vista, CA — The Horns, welcoming a new and exciting game announcer, played well in all three phases of the game defeating the Battling Pirates to improve to 3-3 on the season. Oceanside received the opening kick and had Vista worried as the Battling Pirates made it to the Longhorn 8-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive abruptly ended when the Horns recovered a fumble at the 7-yard line. The Horns put together a clock-eating 9-play 93-yard drive that resulted into 8-0 lead as the 2nd quarter began. After a 3 and out by the crosstown rivals, Vista's offense continued to move the chains effortlessly as the Longhorns again went 66 yards in 7 plays before stalling at the Oceanside 6-yard line. Vista kicked a 23-yard field goal with 2 minutes left in the half to take a 11-0 lead into the intermission. Vista received the opening kick of the 2nd half and made its only mistake of the day. An Oceanside defender stepped in front of a pass and returned the interception 48 yards for the score. What was an 11-point lead, became a 3-point lead for the Longhorns in the blink of an eye. How would the young Horns respond? The answer is.........defensively. All day Oceanside's offense, outside of the opening drive, had trouble finding rhythm against the Longhorn's stellar and aggressive defense. Oceanside crossed the 50-yard line just once in four 2nd half drives. Those 4 drives resulted in a punt and 3 turnovers on downs. The game ended as the Horns, winners in 3 of their last 4 games, now prepare for the Temecula Battling Grizzlies. This reporter hopes the Grizzlies are ready for a team that, all of a sudden, is finding its comfort zone. The young Longhorns are truly defining their identity as a football team. It is a work in progress, but the cohesion of this young team is very noticeable from week to week. Until next week.... Your Roving Reporter, Crack MacJackel
