Irvine, CA — In the opening night of the Omicron League, Pacifica improved to 3-3 and 1-0 in a 42-0 road victory over University (3-3, 0-1). Quarterback Noah Lewis accounted for four of the Mariners’ six touchdowns with two rushing (28 yards and one yard) and two passing (23 yards to Aaron Mora and 37 yards to Addison Adams). Per the OC Register’s Steve Fryer, Pacifica is supposed to be the class of the league. Pacifica amassed 251 yards on the ground with Miguel Campos running for 114 yards on 8 carries including a 64-yard score. Pacifica forced four University turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble recovery). Armando Torres scored the other touchdown on a 74-yard punt return. Uni was held to a single first down on their first drive after receiving the opening kickoff. The Mariners scored on their first possession. After both teams failed on their subsequent drives, Uni had the ball back. Trailing just 7-0, Uni ended up on the short end of three whistles over the final four-plus minutes of the first quarter. Uni turned the ball over on a fumble that appeared to be after the ball carrier was down. The Trojans also appeared to record a sack on third and goal that was ruled an incomplete pass. On the subsequent play, the Trojans looked like they made the stop on a fourth and one play that was ruled a touchdown. On the next drive, the Trojans put together an 11-play drive that included three third down and medium to long plays that resulted in first downs. Backup quarterback Justin Tribble found Geoff Soriano for nine yards, Carl Oldham for 15 yards and Damari Carter for 28 yards on a screen pass off a blitz. The drive ended on an interception which was Uni’s only trip into the red zone. Uni could only muster 119 yards on offense. Dylan Elmer connected on three of 10 passes for 25 yards and two picks. Tribble was 4-6 for 50 yards with one interception. Carl Oldham led University with four catches for 40 yards and returned six kickoff returns for 105 yards. Carter carried the ball 16 times for 35 yards. Borna Sharafkhanian ran the ball four times for 12 yards. Jake Rabold punted five times averaging an impressive 41 yards per boot, including a 52-yard first quarter punt ending up on the Pacifica 8-yard line. That punt was Uni’s longest in the past four-plus years surpassing Andrew Bogard’s multiple efforts of just under 50 yards over the past three years. He added a 55-yard kickoff and a 20-yard kickoff return. On defense, Cruz McMullens led the way with seven tackles including one TFL while sporting a pink cast on Pink Out Night, supporting Susan G Komen and breast cancer awareness. Oldham finished with six tackles including two after interceptions. Soriano added four tackles as did Maxson Encheff (including the other Trojan TFL). Marco Pablo Tirado returned from injured reserve recording three late tackles on successive plays. Uni was called for three penalties for 20 yards while Pacifica was 5-45. The Trojans had the ball for just under 25 minutes while the Mariners had it for just under 23. Uni converted four of nine third downs vs. Pacifica 6-13. Pacifica was 2-2 on fourth down and 1-2 in the red zone. Uni had just six first downs to 15 for Pacifica.
