Esy, CA — It turns out that the Savage Wolves "didn't want no 'stang". The Vista Longhorns secured their first victory of the young season, beating Escondido on a dangerously hot day 28-14. With temperatures hovering around 106 degrees at kick-off, the Horns weathered the elements and the pesky Wolves. Vista scored on its opening drive to take an 8-0 lead on the heels of a 61-yard touchdown run followed by a successful 2-point PAT. Escondido came back to tie the score at 8 with a little more than 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Vista received the ball to begin the 2nd half, and it was a different team. The defensive responded much like they did in the first half totaling 1 interception, 6 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 4 TFL's (tackle for loss) in the 2nd stanza. The most encouraging aspect of the defensive effort was the contribution by the Vista players that are new to the sport. As they grow, so shall the Longhorns. The defensive effort had a dual effect, keeping Escondido off balance and creating additional opportunities for the Longhorn offense. Escondido's misfortune resulted in Vista outscoring the Wolves 20-6 in the half on scores of 1, 6 and 8 yards. All of the scores were made after clock killing sustained drives by the offense. Vista is awaiting word of who their next opponent will be. Until that is known, they will work on becoming an even stronger football team. Your Roving Reporter, Crack MacJackel
