University Center, MI — UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program welcomed Roosevelt to the Hamilton Gym for their home opener Saturday evening. The Cardinals (3-6, 1-1 GLIAC) swept the Lakers (1-9, 0-2 GLIAC) 3-0 winning sets 25-22, 25-22, 29-27.
The Cardinals hit .294 as a team and totaled 11 aces. Sarah Veale had 16 kills for most in the match and hit .355 while posting four aces and six digs. Ava Beard ran the offense with 37 assists as seven other Cardinals posted multiple kills. Natalie Siler led defensively with nine digs.
Set One: The Lakers got on top early with a 6-1 run to give them the 8-2 lead. The Cardinals battled back with a 5-1 run with back-to-back kills by Sedona Coon to cut the lead to two. Roosevelt responded to snag a six-point lead at 16-10 before the SVSU resurgence began. 4-0 and 4-1 runs put Saginaw Valley ahead 21-20 getting two aces, one from Coon and one from Beard, and a kill from Ava Decker and Veale. The Cardinals finished the set off with another 4-1 run taking advantage of two errors by Roosevelt and a Beard kill to claim the set.
Set Two: Veale had seven straight serves and an ace along with two kills from Sage Schumacher as the Cardinals used a 7-0 run to take an 8-2 lead. Roosevelt scored six of the next seven points to cut the lead to one. A Saginaw Valley timeout fueled the offense using a 4-1 run and a 3-1 run to push the lead to five. Roosevelt pushed back and tied the set 19-19 and 20-20 before a 5-2 run was ended by a Makaylah Roberts kill to give SVSU a 2-0 set lead.
Set Three: The Lakers started up 8-4 but Roberts and the Cardinals took the momentum. Roberts tallied five kills to end with six on nine attacks. Saginaw Valley tied the set eight times as a 4-1 run got them back in it. Roosevelt took a three-point lead late to make it 23-20 before a 3-0 run for the Cardinals capped off by an Ella Lochbiler kill tied it. The Lakers forced extras and Saginaw Valley held match point three more times before taking the match point with a Roberts kill and a Veale ace to secure the victory.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley volleyball heads across US-10 for their second match this year against the Northwood Timberwolves (8-1, 2-0 GMAC). The match is set to start at 7:00 PM EST from the Bennett Center on Wednesday, September 25.
