Sault Ste Marie, MI — SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program started their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play against Lake Superior State University Thursday evening. The Cardinals (2-6, 0-1 GLIAC) fell 3-0 to the Lakers (4-5, 1-0 GLIAC) with set scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-12. Sarah Veale led the Cardinals with 12 kills and eight digs. She also tied second in blocks with Makaylah Roberts with two assists. Ava Decker led with one solo block and two assists. Jackie Scheiber and Ava Beard split sets running the offense as Scheiber had nine assists and two digs while Beard had eight assists, three digs, and three kills on five attacks. Set One: Saginaw Valley got the first multi-point lead after a 3-0 run made it 6-4 with a kill from Veale and an ace from Natalie Siler. SVSU pushed the lead with a 4-1 run and a 6-3 run to make it 17-11. Veale tallied three kills during that period along with an ace from Beard. The Lakers battled back with a 2-0 and 5-0 run to tie the set at 18-18. LSSU took the lead at 24-22, then Sedona Coon tied the set with a kill at 25-25 before Lake State took the next two points and the set. Set Two: Another tight set was broken open by the Lakers with a 6-1 run to make it 13-10 LSSU. The Cardinals tied it up late in the set with a 4-1 run to make it 18-18. Both teams traded five 2-0 runs as Lake State took a three-point lead before Saginaw Valley brought it within one at 24-23. Like the first set, the Lakers claimed the final point and the two-point set win. Set Three: The Cardinals started with a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead. LSSU tied it at 5-5, 6-6, and 7-7 and then took a four-point lead with a 6-2 run. SVSU took points from two service errors and an attack error before a 12-1 run wrapped up the final set at 25-12. Up Next: Saginaw Valley volleyball heads back to campus for their home opener on Saturday. They host GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt (1-7, 0-0 GLIAC) Saturday night at 6:00 PM EST at the Hamilton Gymnasium.
