San Juan Capistrano, CA — Our JV girls bounced back into a 1st place tie with Mater Dei by winning the rematch in a dynamic fashion 13-5, sweeping 8 of 9 sets played in doubles! The first round started out tight, as expected. 3-3, JSerra up 15-13 in game count, following 2 tie-breakers, both at lines #3 - they got the singles, we got the doubles. Then “Katy bar the door” we swept round 2: 6-0! Mater Dei had to put 2 subs into singles, to replace players at lines 2 & 3, however this would have accounted for only 1 more set win for them at best, because Dylan “won out” and Kinsley beat their #1 in round 2; AND our doubles won all the rest of their sets. For their dominance this afternoon, we’re honoring all 3 doubles teams with MVP honors: Rylie Godber with Arina Wagner, Kate Layk with Caitlyn Davidson, Sydney Shaw with Sam McCulloch. Rylie and Arina took 4 games off MD’s top rated, undefeated doubles team, and then easily won both of their remaining sets, 1 more than in our previous match. Well done. Kate and Caitlyn won all 3 sets, crowned by a come-from-behind victory over MD’s previously undefeated doubles team, forcing a tie-breaker and winning it 7-0! This outing was a 1 set improvement over Caitlyn’s first match vs MD, and a 3 set improvement for Kate! A huge difference in final outcome. Maybe they played together once in an early, non-league match, but teaming together for their first Trinity League, kudos to MVP’ers Sam and Sydney who won all 3 sets, including a strong 6-3 win over the top Monarch team, giving MD their 2nd loss of the season. This was a 1 set improvement for Sydney, who had not beat this team previously, and a 3 set improvement for Sam vs MD, switching over from singles to doubles. MVP’er Dylan Henderson shined in singles, winning all 3 again, remaining undefeated in Trinity League play, and for the entire season to date! Special shout out to Kinsley Moore, who defeated #1 player Ava in round 2, after playing over an hour in the opening set vs Addison. She did not get to play Ava in our first match and certainly stepped up to the challenge today - well played Kinz. Last, but certainly not least, kudos to Christina Nama, who went game for game vs MD’s strong #3 player (who beat Sam and Kinsley in our first match) before dropping a tie-breaker. She then fought back to beat a very strong sub 6-4 in round 2. This was easily her best tennis of the 2024 season. Great job today. “As a former swim coach, I always wanted to see my teams peak in the league finals, and I believe we did that today as a team, with our strongest lineup in this critical rematch…..It’s sad these girls - from both teams - won’t be able to shine in a Trinity League Tournament that was rudely taken away from them by some uncaring individuals.” (Coach Keith) Next up: rematch vs Santa Margarita this Thursday at SM, 3 pm.
