Fountain Valley, CA — Overall record 8-1, Trinity League record 1-1. Do ANY OF YOU know how close this match was, and how close we came to being in a commanding lead in league standings? Continue reading to find out…. First let’s give kudos and shout outs to all who deserve them. Dylan Henderson literally destroyed all of her competition, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0. Her win differential is key to how close we came today. MVP for the day, well done. Caitlyn Davidson and Sydney Shaw won two straight matches before losing to Mater Dei’s top team in round 3. MVP honors to you both. Kinsley Moore played the best set of her young career defeating the #2 girl from Trinity League last season (the “lobber”) 6-4, coming back from 3-4 winning the last 3 games. She combined trading lobs along with crushing mid-court put-aways to accomplish what many others can not do against Addison. Well played Kins and MVP honors for pulling out the longest and Herculean set in round 1 and making score 3-3 going into round 2. Sam McCulloch battled 3 solid singles players and got 3,3,4 games in each set which gave us some good game counts. Riley Godber and Arina Wagner won our only successful tie-breaker of the day, we lost 2 others. Christina Nama and Kate Layk although “winless”, forced 2 come from behind tie-breakers and got one more game (3) off their top doubles team than any other JSerra team. Gianna Gancar came in to replace Kinsley in round 3, and played well against MD’s top singles player. Now, “how close” you ask? Please understand this is a mathematical dissection of today’s match and is no way a criticism of any singles player or doubles team, ok? We won 77 games, they won 81. If we had won the other 2 tie-breakers, that would have taken the overall set totals to 9-9. AND, the overall GAME TOTALs would have then been 79-79. A total tie! Under normal circumstances, per Trinity League or CIF bylaws, we would have had to play either: 1 full round again 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 singles and dubs - full sets; or 6 super, 10 point tie-breakers; or 18 super, 10 point tie-breakers! ….depending on who you ask. Oh yeah, we could have done NONE of those on the public courts, would have had to finish whatever tie-break method before our next dual match in 2 weeks. And here’s the kicker: we would have NOT been able to put Kinsley back into the match, as she was sub’d out in the final round. So those of you wanting to get into close matches, there are a lot of variables we coaches must consider before making those decisions, understood? Overall, efforts were excellent and the players who didn’t play their best, ‘fessed up and promised to do better in the rematch. Next up: Tuesday, Oct. 15th vs Santa Margarita.
