Belle Vernon, PA — South Fayette return back to the Mon Valley for a non-conference tilt versus perennial power Belle Vernon. The Lions (4-0) won their first road trip last week as they used a 5 TD performance by Drew Welhorsky and 8 QB sacks on defense to over power Elizabeth Foward. The Lions were led by Jr Tyson Wright, who led the team out as a weekly captain for his offensive blocking performance the week before. This week, he excelled defensively with 4 sacks and threw in an offensive TD reception for his second of the year. Also adding TD receptions were Ben Cavenaugh (3 catches, 84 yards, and 2 TDs), Ray Schuler (3 catches, 48 yards, and 1 TD), and Alex Deanes (3 catches, 65 yards, 1 TD). Special Teams was a major factor in the Friday the 13th game. #41 Anthony Charles led the way with two key FG blocks and a third that still carrommed through the upright. His second block came after the Lions gave up a long kick off return that was ended with kicker Luke Gillen getting the returner out of bounds at the Lion 11 yardline. The defense stood tall, forced a FG block, and the Lions answered with a 41 yard FG of their own. The Lions now turn their attention to the Belle Vernon Area Leopards (1-2). The Leopards have had recent success, winning back-to-back State Championships in 2022 and 2023. Led by Head Coach Matt Humbert, the Leopards have had a brutal schedule of games. Weather canceled a game versus Aliquippa in the first quarter, resulting in a 12-0 loss. The Leopards bounced back with a win versus Central Valley in Week 2. Last week, they faced the #1 RB in the country, losing to McKeesport 28-7. The Leopards are led by SR #4 Alonzo Wade. With plenty of game experience, Wade stands at 6'3" and can break a play at any time. Wade also excels on the basketball court. Kickoff is at 7pm on Friday.
