Romeo, MI — Adams Varsity Highlanders invaded Romeo for their 24’ season opener looking to start off the season with a bang. The Highlanders came out of the gate on the opening drive looking like a well oiled machine. Humbert and Watters combined for a nice sustained drive that was capped off when Watters took it to the house for the first TD of the season. Seymour put it through the uprights for the first PAT and it was quickly 7-0. The Highlanders dug in the first series with some key hits from Kania and Beccari stale mating the Bulldogs and forcing a punt giving their offense great field position for their second drive. The Highlanders continued to grind yards out on the ground and a big unsportsmanlike conduct call put them in position to widen the gap. Humbert and Watters connected for a big gain setting Watters up for a short scamper into the end zone making it 13-0. Seymour split the uprights again and it was quickly 14-0. The Highlanders defense came up big with a few key plays by Beccari and Humbert who had a huge stop deep in Highlander territory forcing the Bulldogs to a 4th and long. The Bulldogs were unable to put any points on the board after a missed field goal attempt. The Highlanders were driving again late in the second with a huge pick up by Humbert putting them in field goal range. Unfortunately they came up short and went into the locker room at halftime up 14-0. Romeo came out of the shoot the second half ready to go and were able to put 7 points on the board their opening drive making it 14-7. Adams wasn’t able to get in sync to start the second half and had a quick turn over on downs their first series. Romeo answered yet again and proved they had some fight left in the dog and put together another nice drive and put another one in the end zone making it 14-14. The Highlanders went to the air assault and Watters connected with Hollenbeck and Tillitson the Highlanders were on the move yet again. Humbert, Watters and Battershell continued the ground assault and the Highlanders were in scoring position yet again. Unfortunately the field goal was unsuccessful and the score remained 14-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Highlanders defense came up big with another huge stop by Beccari late in the 4th giving the Highlanders the opportunity for a game winning drive. Humbert, Watters. Battershell, Dawood and Offer all teamed up and continued their ground assault behind their offensive line moving the sticks and keeping the drive alive setting the Highlanders up for a game winning field goal. Unfortunately Romeo had other plans and blocked the field goal attempt sending the game into overtime. Romeo made short work of their first possession in OT and put 7 more on the board making it 21-14. The Highlanders weren’t done and answered with a score of their own when Humbert went over top to fight his way into the end zone. In Highlander fashion knowing they came to win Watters connected with Tilotson on the two point conversion in the end zone solidifying the win 22-21 in OT. The Highlanders will travel to Rochester High next week where they will look to clip their cross town rivals Falcons wings and build upon their first weeks performance.
