Leavenworth, KS — Leavenworth- On a cold night to play soccer our girls fought but fell short to Leavenworth High School. This was a game closer than the scoreline indicated, where the girls took shots, defended well and moved the ball around the field. Leavenworth came out fast and physical, but our girls matched their physicality and really battled hard. We kept the score even 0-0 at halftime. The second half we had about a 10 minute period that Leavenworth was able to catch up out of position but we cleaned it up quickly and went back on the attack. Years past this game could have gotten out of hand. This team showed that they are tough and that they will never stop battling. That is all you can ask from this group and in the long run, that attitude will help them persevere through difficult situations. After having a week off the girls looked good and eager to play tonight. Forwards- Miley continues to improve in the attack and us coaches truly believe that she will be a scoring machine for our team. Bailey was excellent on the wing, she is showing great speed and is getting by defenders and creating chances for our team on the outside. Breeonna filled in on the wing for Marissa and did an excellent job. She's just learning the position but being a senior and having experience on the outside in the back line i think will help her. Midfielders- Natalie capped off another good display. She showed flashes of brilliance and that she can take over a game. Just a freshman, she is figuring out the high school game and we truly believe you will see her dominating games in her future. Kayla continues to get better at the attacking mid spot. She has good skill and is figuring up the link up passes there in the midfield. Mckenna again was a rock for our middle. The senior captain stands strong in the middle has become a good defensive mid that knows when to pressure and is continuing to get better at directing play. Grae subbed in and continues to get better with each game. We believe she is going to be a great advantage in the future as she gets more experience playing in the mid and finding her outlet passes when she wins the ball. Defenders- I think we have found our back 4. They can be a staple for this program for years to come. Macie was a rock in the back, her getting a year of experience under her belt last year has really helped her this year and it's starting to show. She is becoming stronger and stronger and is starting to read the game well. Grace continues to improve, her speed and recovery speed is great and she continues to get better at reading the game. Harlee was solid again on the right side. She has pretty much locked down all the advancing attacks on her side. She has stepped in on the outside back spot and is getting stronger and stronger at it. Paityn had another great game. Just a freshman, she goes toe to toe against other seniors and is able to stop the attack. She looks to play down the line as well and i expect as the season goes she will find ways to be involved in the attack and show you all the dynamic player that she is. Though the scoreline says we lost by 3, you don't really feel like it. We were in the game for all but 10 minutes. Once we start finishing i truly believe it will be like a snowball and you will see more and more goals from this group.
