Burnt Hills’ Miscues Lead to Early Deficit in Loss to Columbia

Burnt Hills, NY — The Burnt Hills Spartans had trouble keeping up with the Columbia Blue Devils in an 11-2 loss on Tuesday.
Columbia got on the board in the top of the first inning after Cole Mellen hit a sacrifice fly, and John DelGrosso singled, each scoring one run.
The Blue Devils scored five runs on two hits in the top of the second inning. Steven Heller singled, scoring one run, Mellen drew a walk, scoring one run, an error scored two runs, and Shane Baker singled, scoring one run.
Andrew Gabriel homered to left field, scoring three runs in the top of the third for Columbia.
Gabriel earned the win. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and one run over four innings, striking out six and walking four. Hunter Rauhauser pitched three and one-third innings in relief for Burnt Hills. The right-handed pitcher allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) while, striking out two and walking none. Christopher Puliafico took the loss for the Spartans. The right-handed pitcher went one and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out none and walking four.
Jack Sunkes, Timothy Venditti, and Mason McDonald each collected one hit for Burnt Hills. Sunkes and Venditti each drove in one run. Matt Martin paced the Spartans with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting eight walks. Silas Marvin, Venditti, and Martin each stole multiple bases. Burnt Hills ran wild on the base paths, tallying eight stolen bases for the game and they turned one double play defensively.
Gabriel drove the middle of the lineup, leading Columbia with three runs batted in. The pitcher went 2-for-4 on the day. Gabriel and Heller each collected two hits for the Blue Devils. Baker led Columbia with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying seven walks.
Burnt Hills play at home on Wednesday against Niskayuna in their next game.
