Cardinals Upset #5 Greyhounds on the Road

Indianapolis, IN — INDIANAPOLIS – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team scored a big 70-67 win over No. 5 Indianapolis on the road on Thursday night. The Cardinals (2-2) used a 12-0 run in the second half to take a lead before fighting off a late push by the Greyhounds (1-2) to hold on for the upset.
Freddie McIntosh and Tre Garrett led SVSU in scoring with 16 points. McIntosh drained four shots from distance while Garrett shot 50% from the floor to lead the team to victory. Toodles Seal and Kevonne Taylor finished the quartet of double-digit scorers for the Cardinals with 10 points respectively.
Garrett led the defensive effort as well with four steals. He also hauled in five boards. Curtis Jackson had a team-high five assists.
The first half remained close throughout as the lead was traded seven times, with the final time coming from an 11-2 run by the Greyhounds that put UIndy up 39-31. The Cardinals hit back-to-back three-point jumpers to cut the lead to four as the teams headed to the locker room with the score sitting at 41-37.
A 12-0 run began the second half as SVSU flipped the advantage in the opening five minutes of the final period, which allowed the Cardinals to build a 49-41 edge. The Greyhounds battled back to cut the deficit to one point, 54-53, with 7:16 remaining. A three-point jumper gave UIndy its first lead of the second half, but it was short-lived as McIntosh drilled a shot from deep on the next possession to recapture the advantage.
Saginaw Valley State kept the lead despite the Greyhounds rallying to tie the score at 62 and 64 with just under 1:50 left on the clock. A free throw gave UIndy a 65-64 lead, but Garrett shut the door with a layup that gave the Cardinals the final lead needed to seal the win.
The Cardinals return home to host rival Northwood on Tuesday, November 21. The game against the Timberwolves is set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
