Hillsdale, MI — HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team was outpaced by Hillsdale on the road against Hillsdale on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (0-2) rallied late, but couldn't overcome an early Charger advantage in a 90-75 defeat.
Maurice Barnett was the leading scorer off the bench for SVSU with 19 points. The Chicago, Illinois native shot 7-11 and added three rebounds to his stat line in the losing effort. Kevonne Taylor tallied 17 points on 8-9 shooting from the floor. Tre Garrett added 14 points, while D'Juan "Toodles" Seal scored 10 and pulled down six boards. Garrett was the main playmaker for SVSU with four assists.
Hillsdale hit the game's opening shot from three that started a 9-0 lead and the Chargers never looked back. Taylor made back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to five points, but a 6-0 run by Hillsdale pushed the advantage to 18-6. Ethan Hill made a jump shot that sparked a 9-0 run that cut the deficit to 23-17 with 10:22 left in the first half. Hillsdale responded with an 11-0 run to push the lead 34-17 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. The lead was pushed to 44-24 when the teams entered the locker room at the break.
The Cardinals scored the first four points of the second half as they worked to dwindle the margin down and rally back in the game. Garrett hit a layup to cut the Charger lead to nine points, 80-71, but that was the closest SVSU could get as the Chargers hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
The SVSU men's basketball team returns to the safety of home to face Kuyper for a Tuesday night tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
