Wayland, MI — The Fighting Scots opened their season with a thrilling 51-48 overtime win over Wayland on Tuesday night. Despite trailing the entire game, the team found a way to respond when it mattered most. It was a sloppy affair as both teams struggled taking care of the ball. Down 8 points with roughly 3:00 remaining, Caledonia went on a run and cut Wayland’s lead to three with 12 seconds remaining. Lily Gortmaker stepped up and hit a huge off-balance 3-point shot as the clock expired to force overtime. The Scots took that momentum into the extra period and scored first off a great pass from Lakely Bottom to Teresa Abraham. Shortly after, Mackenzie Devries hit a 3-pointer to extend that lead. Five additional made FT’s helped to seal the game. Lily Gortmaker led the scoring with 18 points. Mackenzie Devries totaled 11 points on three made 3-point shots. Teresa Abraham had six, Lakely Bottom and Jolie King chipped in with five and Baylee Devries added four points. Lakely Bottom led the team with four assists and ten rebounds.
