Dubuque, IA- Coming off of a 32 point win over Eureka their last time out, the Mount Mary basketball team headed to Emmaus Bible College seeking a second consecutive positive result. The Blue Angels used hot three point shooting and ball control to hold off the Eagles and pick up the 75-53 win.
Both teams came out shooting the ball effectively leading to a deadlocked first quarter at 19 all. Mount Mary clamped down defensively in the second quarter and took a 44-29 lead into the intermission. MMU shot 9-17 from beyond the three point line in the first half, and would finish the night with 13 made 3 point goals.
In the second half, the homestanding Eagles would not go away, coming as close as 10 on several occasions, but in the end the Blue Angels knocked down foul shots, took care of the ball, and strung together enough defensive stops for the 22 point margin of victory.
Two first year guards continued their stellar play for the Blue Angels. Vanessa Diaz had a remarkable game, with 28 points on 10-16 shooting from the floor and 8-11 behind the three point line. Diaz also put together a fine floor game, with five steals, six rebounds and three assists. Sanai Ballard came up big once again for Mount Mary as well. Ballard dropped in 16 points, including three for seven from three point land and she snared eight rebounds.
India Lucas played another solid all-around floor game, Lucas posted 6 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.
Joselyn Gonzales posted a double double on the evening, Gonzales had 12 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals in her all around outstanding game. Mount Mary turned the ball over just five times, compared to 16 for Emmaus.
Mount Mary (2-1) will return to the Bloechl Center Thursday night, Novemeber 16th at 7 pm. The Blue Angels will look to pick up a 3rd straight win when they host the Illinois Institute of Technology.
