San Juan Capistrano, CA — There’s an old adage in the insurance business: “What the Big Print Giveth, the Small Print Taketh Away.” That’s true about today’s match w Newport Harbor. What the big scoreboard shows does not come close to telling the true story….. …..First off, and I’ll quit bringing this up (until our celebration banquet), we coaches are happy with the progress of our young beginner / novice players and get joy out of watching you play and compete. 4-6 weeks ago, a lot of you didn’t know what end of the racquet to hold, how to keep score and some of your service tosses landed in different zip codes! You played very well against a perennial OC program, usually a top 10 team at the varsity level, which trickles down. Everybody wore the correct uniform (yay!), showed up on time, got most of your serves in and were enjoying each other’s company. Now back to the old insurance adage. If you look closely at the picture of the white / dry erase official scoreboard, you will see that we played in and lost FOUR tie-breakers, lost SIX other sets 4-6! We also let them sub in for an injured player without forcing an automatic default, which is the norm for most other contests. So the small print shows this was the closest 18-0 loss we’ve ever experienced! I kept saying to a few of you parents that Newport was good, but not 18-0 better than our girls. And that showed up on the official scoreboard, in your effort, sportsmanship and attitudes. Thank you players for validating our efforts as coaches over the past summer and early match play this season. Keep improving and having fun :) BTW: the entire 18 member squad gets MVP Honors today! Next up: tomorrow, (Saturday) home vs Foothill. B & C Squads. 12:30 warmup, 1 pm match time. All WHITE uni’s. Mia DeWames SNACK duty.
