San Juan Capistrano, CA — Nobody lost today, as far as the coaching staff is concerned….probably the best “feel good” loss we’ve ever encountered in 16 years of JSerra tennis. With multiple beginners on both teams, play was super close, with great sportsmanship and a joy to be a part of. Thank you for your GREAT fan support too. We love the all doubles format and appreciate the schools and coaches who allow us to run that format at all our home FS matches. With 15 players, 9 got to play twice and 6 got to play all 3 sets. For many of our players, this was their very first competitive set of tennis ever played. The improvement after summer camps and 2 1/2 weeks of practice and challenge matches is remarkable. We were “in it to win it” and while nobody likes to lose, you can all hold your heads high. 5 of the 18 sets played were decided by tie-breakers (we won 2). We were very balanced today, winning 4 sets on 1-2-3 and 4 more on courts 4-5-6. Kudos to Analia Taft and Sydney Shaw, playing in their first high school match ever, who rotated up to court 1 in round #2 and beat their top team 6-5 in a TB set. They were the only pair to defeat the Oilers top duo. Freshman Boxi Gambol and softball transfer Jessica Jenkins got their first high school win ever, defeating their #2 team in round 2. Winning 2 of 3 sets played in the top half of “the draw” and earning MVP honors today, congrats to returner Ella Joutz and freshman Gianna Gancar at line #1 doubles. Playing in the 4-5-6 court rotations, kudos go out to freshman Emily Volk and volleyball transfer Allie Kraiss who got our only win across line # 5 doubles, first win of their young “careers.” Our line # 4 trio of Emily Meyer, Jenny Ji and Chloe Gallaher dominated!…. winning all 3 sets across the board, each twice, once each with the other two. MVP honors go out to each of these players, well done!!! Next up: this Saturday, Sept 2nd, 10am at Aliso Niguel HS. Squads B & C. Be there around 9:15, no later than 9:30, so Coach Jena can arrange a starting line-up. Thank you.
