Goleta, CA — Kaleb Williams and Danny Vidaure took advantage of solid blocking from the offensive line to power the Dos Pueblos football team to a 55-0 win over Channel Islands on Friday night at Scott O’Leary Stadium. Williams rushed for 148 yards on just seven carries and scored three touchdowns. Vidaure gained 68 yards on nine carries and had one TD. Matt Welch also ran for a pair of scores late in the game. Quarterback Gonzo Murillo did a nice job managing the game. He threw two touchdown passes, a 15-yarder to Ivan Velez and a swing pass to Micah Barnhart who turned it into a 51-yard score. Kicker Diego Lopez kicked seven PATs. It was the first Channel League win for the Chargers (3-3, 1-3), who suffered three straight lopsided losses against Buena, Ventura and Pacifica. DP coach AJ Pateras credited the solid performance to three good weeks of practice. “We’ve had three really good weeks of practice despite some scores (against Ventura and Pacifica),” said Pateras. “It’s just been about getting consistent in how we do things. It’s been three weeks of really working on the little things and focusing on getting better. And that’s what tonight was.” On their first touchdown, the Chargers capitalized on a bad snap of a punt and started their drive at the Channel Islands 34. On third and 3, Williams took a handoff and bolted off the right side of the line for a 27-yard touchdown. A bad snap on the PAT left DP with a 6-0 lead at the 6:40 mark on the first quarter. Iyad Ahmad-Reda set up the second score with an interception. Murillo connect with Velez for the touchdown and Lopez kicked the PAT for a 13-0 lead at 4:11 of the first quarter. Channel Islands (0-6, 0-4 in league) put its best drive together, moving the ball to the DP 39. But the Raiders were stopped on fourth down and Dos Pueblos responded with their third touchdown. After Williams rushed for 10 yards, Murillo threw a swing pass to Barnhart and he blazed 51 yards for the score and a 20-0 lead. “Gonzo has maintained good leadership the while time,” said Pateras. “There hasn’t really been a doubt. It’s more of what we’ve been able to see what he’s comfortable with. He played JV quarterback last year, so we’re not really worried about him at all in that position. We think he’s a great leader. Losing Ryan (Marsh) was a huge thing, but when we talk about character and the type of guys that Gonzo is, he’s just like Ryan. So, we’re very lucky in that regard.” The Chargers picked up one more TD before halftime on a 1-yard run by Vidaure. The score was set up by a 22-yard run by Williams and passes of 21 and 19 yards from Murillo to Benji Dunson and Barnhart. Williams ran a misdirection play 26 yards for a touchdown and a 34-0 lead on DP’s first possession of the second half. He bolted 55 yards for his third TD of the game to make it 41-0. “Kaleb’s got a lot of potential, we’ve been saying for two years,” said Pateras. “We’re just waiting for him to start tapping into that and he’s starting to. He’s doing a lot of good things in practice and it’s starting to translate. Same with Danny, it’s just consistency.” The Chargers turned an interception and return by Welch into another score. Adam Almada ran 1 yard for the touchdown. Welch finished the scoring with a 30-yard jaunt with 1:42 left. Dos Pueblos travels to Oxnard next Friday.
