Senior Quarterback Landon Martin leads the offense onto the field in the Raiders Freeway League Opener.
Buena Park, CA — The Sonora Raiders spoiled another Homecoming on Friday Night, as they squared off against Sunny Hills in the 2023 Freeway League Opener. Big scores from Senior Quarterback Landon Martin, Senior Running Back Tyler Robertson, and Junior Running Back Anthony Abad propelled the Raiders to a decisive 21-13 victory over the host Lancers of Sunny Hills.
On offense, the Raiders took to the ground to overwhelm the Lancer defense. Junior running back Anthony Abad led the way, rushing for 140 yards on 17 carries and a key touchdown. Senior running back added to the attack, with 3 carries for 49 yards, including a 44 yard touchdown run to give the Raiders their first lead of the night.
Defensively, Sonora proved up to the task in stopping the Lancers rushing game. Senior safety Eddy Hernandez led the way in solo tackles with 5, and added two assists as well. Senior linebacker Gabriel Bagdanoff performed with excellent effort all night, and tallied 13 total tackles, including a key tackle for loss late in the fourth quarter. Junior outside linebacker Brady Ackerman had the defensive play of the night, tallying his first sack of the season on a huge third down play.
Sonora moves to 5-1, 1-0 on the season, while Sunny Hills falls to 3-3, 0-1 overall. Your Sonora Raiders hit the road again this Friday to take on Buena Park High School, (4-2, 0-1) and kickoff is set for 7:00PM. We will see you there! #OurWay
