La Habra, CA — The Sonora Raiders hosted Vincent Memorial Catholic High School of Calexico at 5PM Friday night, in their home opener for the 2023 season. The Raiders would ultimately walk away the victors in a 14-7 slugfest, in which both offenses faced their challenges and setbacks. Sonora was led by the defensive unit, forcing four turnovers on the evening, including 2 key interceptions from Senior Corner Steve Peru. Outside linebacker Brady Ackerman would also force a fumble, and Safety Olin Morales Hyder would also come away with a red zone interception to stop the Vincent Memorial threat.
Offensively, Junior Running Back Anthony Abad led the charge for Sonora, rushing for 125 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Olin Morales Hyder added to the Raiders offense with a 9 yard touchdown catch of his own. The Raiders highlighted their dynamic run game against the visiting Scots, rushing for 210 yards on 29 carries.
Sonora moves to 2-0 on the young season, while Vincent Memorial drops to 1-1. The Raiders will travel to Western High School in a SATURDAY night contest against the host Kennedy High School Fighting Irish (2-0). Kickoff time will return to 7:00 PM for this weeks contest.
