Jermyn, PA — Dunmore’s seniors remembered the crushing defeat at Lakeland Stadium in the District 2 Class 2A championship game last year and were determined not to let it happen again. On a night when the Bucks racked up 421 yards of total offense, it was two defensive plays that sparked No. 7 Dunmore’s 55-7 rout of Lakeland in a Lackawanna League Division II game. After senior Domenic DeSando scored on a 10-yard run to give the Bucks the lead, Dunmore senior defensive lineman Chris Conte tackled Lakeland’s Chase Rosenkrans in the end zone for a safety with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Junior Gabe Franek scored on a 33-yard touchdown run just before the end of the first quarter and senior Danny Pigga returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown with 10:13 left in the second, one play after Lakeland tried to take the momentum when Ethan Depoti recovered a fumble. The long interception return energized Pigga as he scored on touchdown runs of 55 and 65 on Dunmore’s next two possessions. “It’s definitely exciting,” Pigga said. “I think it got the whole team going.” Senior lineman Nathan Reuther sprung Pigga’s first touchdown with a pancake block near the line of scrimmage. “As soon as coach called it, I knew instantly I’ve got to get stuff done,” Reuther said. “(When) we play as team, you see what we do and there’s more to come.” Senior quarterback Thomas Bowen became the fourth Bucks ball carrier to score a touchdown by racing to the pylon for a 12-yard touchdown just before halftime. Pigga added his third rushing touchdown on a 39-yard scamper less than four minutes into the third quarter. The convincing win was satisfying for Conte who helped the Bucks force Lakeland into negative-six rushing yards in first half. “It was heartbreaking last year ... we ended the season up here,” he said. “It’s good to come back up here and get a big win.” (SOURCE: Robert Tomkavage, The Scranton Times-Tribune)
