Laguna Niguel, CA — On a beautiful sunny day at the El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel, California, the varsity golf teams from Laguna Beach high school and Marina high school faced off in a Sunset Conference, cross league match on April 6, 2023. The El Niguel Country Club course always presents a difficult challenge, with OB on the left and trouble on the right of the narrow fairways; the course also has well-bunkered, tiered, and slopey greens that tend to be very fast. Overall, it is a tough test. Marina's players were able to navigate the course better than the Breakers, and Marina emerged victorious with a final score of 204 to Laguna Beach's 237. Despite the loss, Laguna Beach's players should be commended for their efforts as they posted their second-best team score of the season on the El Niguel course. Freshman, Kiyan Arshadi, led the team with a score of 44, while junior, Russell Franconi-Krychman, delivered a solid performance with a score of 45. Ranen Seeck shot 46, Chase Tyson and Preston Towe both shot 51 and Evan Kretschmer shot 56. Also on the course for Laguna were freshmen Andrew Tyson who shot 55 and Sasha Riahi who shot 58. Both of them were called up from the JV team to fill spots on the roster for the day. It was the first exposure to varsity-level golf for both players and a great opportunity for them to see and start to learn how to play the El Niguel course.
