Santa Ana, CA — The boys volleyball teams had a clean sweep against Costa Mesa in their season opener at home. JV won in 2 straight sets and Varsity won in 5 sets. The JV match was led by returning players Alex Avila, Baldo Rodriguez and Sergio Rojas, but newcomers Bryan Huirache, Arturo Ascencio, Andrew Phan, Misael Quezada and Fernando Aguilar contributed as well for the win! Varsity came out strong and won the first 2 sets in what looked to be a quick and solid sweep win, but Costa Mesa came back to fight in game 3 and game 4 turned out to be a dog fight where Costa Mesa took that win 26-24, but Varsity didn’t back down and came back throwing punches right from the beginning of the set to win the 5 and final set 15-4. Returners Diego Nieto, Thomas Tran and Benjamin Nixon helped set the tone and first time varsity players Angelo Nieto, Ma’Gen Young, George Uribe, Diego Arroyo, and Isaac Melchor followed their lead for the victory.
