A complete game shutout by Petrillo put the Varsity Tigers up in league play
La Cañada, CA — The Varsity Tigers opened Rio Hondo League play on Tuesday with a dominating performance against La Canada. Ben Petrillo pitched a complete game shutout, striking out seven and only giving up three hits over seven innings. The Spartans couldn't handle the tough right-hander, as Petrillo's overpowering fastball and tricky off-speed stuff kept their batters off balance.
The Tigers were excellent at the plate as well, scattering ten hits and scoring eight runs. Jason Yipp went 3 for 4, and Quinn Sterling and Luke Riffle had two hits apiece. Noah Adams, Griffin Johnson, and Petrillo also had hits.
The Tigers hope to continue their winning streak in league with a game against San Marino on Thursday.
