Recap
FS Lady Lions defeat San Clemente 12-9 - first time in many moons!
JSerra Catholic 12, San Clemente 9
Lining up at San Clemente for 1st Frosh Soph match of the early 2022 season.
San Clemente, CA — It’s been about 10 years since JSerra defeated San Clemente in tennis. First time was with Coach Chelsea Crook, a 4 year varsity player at SC, who coached for us 4-5 years. Kirk and I were at separate V and JV matches vs SMCHS, and didn’t get to witness that early FS victory. This afternoon’s win was S-W-E-E-T :)
Making use of all 7 courts, we played 4x3 sets of doubles and 3x3 sets of singles - winning 5 singles sets and 7 doubles sets. Very balanced attack today with great effort all the way around.
The match started out slowly, as JSerra only won 2 of 7 first round sets, including 3 Tie-Break losses! (: Fighting back in the 2nd round, JS won 4 of 7 sets, putting the score at 8-6, SC’s favor. And then came round 3: JSerra Lions got the claws out and won 6 of 7 sets to win the match 12-9 for a huge come-from-behind victory.
Elliana Castro and Viana Poggi won the 11th set for JS, putting us over the top to seal the deal. Then Faith Blower and Kate Layk won their 2nd set of the afternoon, for our 12th set.
GG Fernandez came back to win 2 sets of singles, after dropping an opening set tie-breaker, demonstrating some great net play with solid point construction.
Doubles “trio” of Ella Joutz, Bryanna Noorian and Molly Harrington combined for 3 set victories (2 each) at line 3 doubles - earning MVP honors for winning 100% of matches played. Well done!
In singles, MVP honors go out to Alexandra Marsh, who actually won 3 straight sets of singles in her debut match as a high school tennis player. Great job today!
This match ranks as one of 3 top Frosh Soph matches in school’s history. Proud of each and every one of you for a great opening day and sending your coach home with a sense of accomplishment. Thank you :)
And MVP honors to our Fan Base and all the parents who stepped up to drive to both matches. I think we outnumbered San Clemente parents on their own courts.!!!
Next match: Friday, Sept. 2nd, home vs Sage Hill.
