Recap
Huge comeback in round 3 to defeat Mater Dei 10-8.
San Juan Capistrano, CA — Huge win today for our girls and the program, started out slow though….the “photographer” didn’t get a lot of pictures, spent more time coaching, watching and cheerleading. 🤪🚫📸
We were down 2 starters at the beginning of the match, one for the entire afternoon. Hailey Klein started the match with Bella Aftabi - they had a great opening round win on court #6. Hailey went on to win 2 more sets with Cecilia Nama, and was the only player to win 3 sets this afternoon - earning her sole MVP honors. Well done!
Kudos to the other two, Bella and Cecilia for joining the 100% club, winning all their sets played with no losses.
The score was 3-3 at the end of round 1, with 2 wins at dubs and 1 in singles. Midway through round 2, we were losing on 5 of the 6 sets! We’re blanked in singles, a rarity, and lost a tiebreaker in doubles to go behind 5-7.
However, surprisingly, we were up on game count 54-53 going into the 3rd and final round. If we could just get a 4th set in that round, we could tie 9-9 and win on games……
We’ll, we didn’t. We won 5 of the final 6 sets, and were a tie-breaker away from winning all 6! This was against their starting 9 players, no subs. Didn’t have to tie and count games - great closing, great win - keeping us in 1st place.
Key sets won in 3rd round were played by Hailey and Cecilia beating their #2 doubles team and by Alma Bayat beating their #2 singles player, both the only wins against those lines. Neeka Barkhordar and Sophia Staff each won a set of singles in a tough half of the draw.
Doubles picked up 7 of our 9 set wins. Winning 2 of 3 in doubles today: Caitlyn with Natalia and Ava with Olivia.
Next up: at Santa Margarita, Thursday, Oct. 13th, 3pm….for outright Trinity League Championship.
(SM beat MD in their first meeting 9-9, 81-81, then won 4 of 6 tie-breaker mini-sets for their win.)
Go LIONS !!!
