Gypsum, CO — Red-Hot Devils Soar Above Red Hawks
by Sophie Weisberger
The second Eagle Valley homecoming game of the week was against Montrose. Everyone was eager to win and get home in time to prep for the hoco dance. CJ Yurcak started off strong with a seven-point serving run. The Devils continued to keep the energy and focus high to finish out the match in three sets. Ione Peterson, Ava Geiman, Christi San Diego and Talia Crawford led their team to victory with multiple kills in the first set, and Taylor Hooper scored with consistent serves in the second and third sets. Coach Garvey ran a five-one in the first set with setters, CJ Yurcak and Sophie Weisberger, and later switched to a six-two with Ashley Jones and Aspen Misch, as well. Natalie Izbiki, Rylie Jones, Mia Garcia and Ivy Laurance were there to pick up difficult swings from Montrose’s strong outside.
When asked about the Devil’s strengths, Coach Garvey replied, “I thought our net play was phenomenal. We reset back to base and won all the fifty-fifty balls. We remained calm and composed in those situations.” He praised the team for rising to the challenge and improving, both in practice and in games. Eagle Valley remains undefeated and first in their league. That night, between the homecoming dance and their victory, the Devils were flying high!
