Blaine, MN — BLAINE, MN – The Bay Norse Softball Team (13-11) won two out of three games in the second day of the Region 13 Crossover Tournament, claiming a 4-2 record in two days. On Tuesday they started the day with a 11-1 loss to Anoka-Ramsey (5-7). They rebounded to dominate Mesabi Range (0-5) by a final score of 13-1, the same as the final the day before. In the nightcap the Norse scratched out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Dakota College at Bottineau.
The Norse offense struggled to string together hits in the first game of the day. They stranded runners in the first four innings, allowing Anoka-Ramsey to build a lead.
Bay managed to limit the damage early, cutting down a lead off triple at the plate in the first. Still the Golden Rams rallied with two outs with a single and back-to-back doubles to claim a two-run lead.
After adding a run in the third, Anoka-Ramsey got a two-run home run from Lyla Galli (FR, Champlain, MN) to open up a five-run lead.
The Golden Rams broke the game open in the seventh with a six-run outburst. They used six hits, and an error in the inning.
The Norse got on the board in the bottom half with an Avery Sorochan (FR, Two Hills, AB) RBI single.
Sarah Wynn (SO, Pitt Meadows, BC) and Rachael Winkel (FR, Silvis, IL) each went two for four for the Norse, one of Wynn's hits was a double.
Winkel took the loss, pitching three innings and giving up six hits, three runs, two earned, and walking no one.
The Norse got back on track in game two, scoring runs early and often. Ellie Miller got things started with a two-out, two-run home run to center. Bay added another pair in the second when Winkel singled with two outs to drive in two.
After scratching across a run in the third, the Norse broke the game wide open in the fourth. Thirteen batters would step to the plate and eight of them would come around to score. Sorochan tripled to drive in a pair, and Natalie Belanger (Fr, Rapid River, MI) did the same. McKenna Bullen (FR, Escanaba, MI) and Wynn had back-to-back RBI doubles as well.
Jamison Ness (FR, Edmonton, AB) pitched three innings for the win, giving up just one hit and striking out four. Brooke Gannon worked two innings, walking one and giving up one run.
Winkel was three for four, Sorochan had a pair of triples in three at bats, and Allison Podhaniuk (FR, Stony Plain, AB) had two hits and two walks in her four plate appearances. Bullen also collected a pair of hits in four at bats.
The last game of the day turned into a classic pitcher's duel.
Destiny Lewis (FR., Fresno, NV) was fantastic for the Ladyjacks of Dakota College of Bottineau. She gave up just thee hits, walked only two, and struck out six.
The Norse sent Karlie Patron (SO, Ishpeming, MI) to the circle and she was able to match the effort. She surrendered five hits, walked no one, and struck out two.
The only run of the game came in the fourth inning. Miller led off the Norse half with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She moved to third on a groundout and Sorochan drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Ladyjacks would have runners reach in the final three innings. In the fifth the Norse turned a double play to eliminate the threat. Kristin Goodacre (SO, Rapid River, MI) through out the runner trying to steal after a leadoff single in the sixth, and the Ladyjacks stranded a one-out double in the seventh.
The Norse will have a quick turnaround this weekend as the go to Joliet Junior College on Friday for a 3 pm doubleheader. On Saturday they have a noon double-dip with the College of Lake County, and finish their trip with a Sunday doubleheader against McHenry County College.
