Newtown, CT — It was an Immaculate game in more ways than one. Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team celebrated Senior Night both prior to and during the game as all six final-year NHS student-athletes scored to help the Nighthawks roll to a 17-6 win over the Immaculate of Danbury Mustangs, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on May 5. Erin Phaneuf, Ella Hage, Meghan Tarpey, Shannon Kelleher, Izzy Butler, and Elena Sughrue all found the back of the net. Butler scored four times and added an assist, Sughrue, Phaneuf, Kelleher, and Jules Battaglia each had two goals. Summer Harrell, Brooke Bulkley, and Jenna Lagan also scored for Newtown. Bulkley had two assists. The Nighthawks went to Pomperaug of Southbury on May 10, built a lead, and hung on to win 9-8, improving to 5-1 in one-goal contests and 12-1 overall in the process. Harrell had three goals, Battaglia had two goals and two assists, Bella Gerace scored twice, Ava Mitchell and Phaneuf both had a goal, and Butler recorded two assists. Newtown hosts nonconference opponent Glastonbury on Saturday, May 14, at noon, then concludes the regular season with a visit to Notre Dame-Fairfield on Tuesday, May 17, at 5:30 pm. The Hawks have lost only to New Fairfield, a 10-9 overtime contest, and will try to get back to the South-West Conference championship game. NHS fell to Joel Barlow of Redding in last year’s pinnacle game. There are no teams unbeaten in SWC play with New Fairfield having lost to Weston 11-9 on May 10. The playoffs are scheduled to begin with SWC quarterfinal-round action on Thursday, May 19.
