Stratford, CT — Newtown High School’s softball team posted a 25-0 victory over host and South-West Conference opponent Bunnell of Stratford on April 11. Coming off consecutive shutout losses to tough FCIAC foes St Joseph of Trumbull (3-0 on April 4) and Danbury (1-0 on April 8), the Nighthawks needed just five innings to score more than two dozen in this mercy-rule performance. Madison Thoesen homered, Sydney Adolfson doubled twice, and Brianna Pellicone, Nicole Marrazzo, and Sophia Caruso also doubled. Thoesen and Adolfson both drove in four runs, Ashley Hubner and Caruso both knocked in three, and Marrazzo, Rachel Casagrande, and Maddy Twitchell each drove in a pair. Pitcher Caroline Gardner allowed only one hit and one walk and struck out nine. The Nighthawks jumped back into FCIAC action with a rescheduled game at Fairfield Warde on April 12 and edged the Mustangs 3-2. Thoesen had two hits and two runs batted in, Adolfson was solid in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just three hits and striking out nine, and delivered at the plate by helping her own cause with a solo homer. Pellicone had a double and two runs scored. Newtown beat Weston 12-2 on April 13. Read about that game in the April 22 print edition.
