Bulldogs Stagger in Doubleheader, Falls Twice to Bloomsburg

Bowie, MD — The Bowie State softball team (4-6-1) hung tough with the visiting Bloomsburg Huskies after being edge 10-9 in the opener but dropped a 15-9 decision in game two as the Bulldogs fell twice in their home opener Saturday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field.
Senior Shaniya Gordon (Elkridge, MD) hit safely in both games with a pair of doubles and her first home run of the season to go along with six RBI's. Graduate senior Evelyn Buehlman (Ellicott City, MD), freshman Aliyah Smith (Stafford, VA) and Morgan Joseph (Flanders, NJ) all tallied a pair of hits each in the two games combined.
Bowie State fell behind 5-0 after two complete innings, the Huskies (6-2) had plated two runs in the first and three in the second. Bloomsburg added three more capped off by a single from Nicolette Ray that pushed the Huskies lead to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard when Buehlman doubled to centerfield for an RBI as freshman Kayla Evans (Bridgeville, DE) scored cutting the deficit 8-1 after three complete.
BSU tallied one more run in the fourth on a single from freshman Saniya Jones (Louisa, VA) that allowed Joseph to score but that would be the last time either teams would score as the Huskies was able to secure game one in seven innings.
Similar to the opener, Bloomsburg got ahead early with three runs in the second but the Bulldogs fired off three runs on two hits highlighted by Gordons homer to left field that tied the game at 3-3 after two complete innings. The Huskies blistered to a seven-point lead in the third after tallying seven runs on eight hits but the Bulldogs didn't go away quietly, tacking on five runs of their own including singles from Smith, Joseph and freshman Brittany Brewer (Savage, MD), followed by a double from Gordon.
Down by two runs in the fourth, Bowie State's defense held the Huskies scoreless and was able to score one run in the bottom but Bloomsburg plated six runs (15-9) in the sixth with BSU unable to respond for a comeback attempt.
Bowie State will have a quick turnaround as the Bulldogs play host to Mansfield on Sunday, Mar. 6. First pitch is slated for 12 noon at the BSU softball field.
