Hoskins breaks SVSU career 3-point record, Cardinals top Tigers 89-67

University Center, MI — UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team picked up an 89-67 non-conference victory over Grace Christian University on Sunday afternoon at James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena. The Cardinals moved to 7-3 overall on the season, as senior Darnell Hoskins Jr. broke a program record for career three-pointers made. The Dayton, Ohio native finished the day with seven three-point baskets made today for a total of 221, breaking the record of 215 held by Garrett Hall (2013-17).
How it happened:
SVSU began the game quickly, going on a 9-0 run to start the game thanks to points from Tyler Witz and Hoskins. The Tigers were able to answer before the first media timeout, and SVSU led 12-8.
The Cardinals opened up a 12-point lead in the first half thanks to layups by Freddie McIntosh and Jarno Pomstra.
Grace Christian answered with back-to-back threes to close out the half, and SVSU took a 36-28 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Tigers got to within two points, before a layup by Tyrik Singh and a three by Hoskins gave SVSU a six-point lead.
The Cardinals controlled the majority of the second half, outscoring Grace Christian 53-39 and earning the victory.
Inside the Box Score:
Hoskins led all players with 23 points on 8-10 shooting and 7-9 from deep. The senior also posted three assists and had three steals.
Maurice Barnett finished with 17 points on 7-12 shooting.
Singh and Delano Smith had 10 points each for SVSU.
The Cardinals were 34-61 from the field, 10-25 from deep, and 11-18 from the free-throw line, while the Tigers were 24-54 from the field, 12-28 from deep, and 7-12 from the line.
Grace Christian was led by Parker Neu with 17 points.
