A cool, crisp sunny afternoon set the scene as the Adam’s Freshmen Highlanders hosted the Lake Fenton Blue Devils. Adams started their second home game with #24 Battershell kicking off to the visiting Blue Devils. The Blue Devil kick returner was met by a clan of Highlanders - #1 Offer, #5 Humbert, #18 Dempster, #24 Battershell, and #34 Sacco - crashing into him for no return. The Devils started on their own 20 yard line to begin their first offensive possession. The Devils came out hot - getting positive yards on the first 2 runs taking the ball up to their 31. Humbert halted the momentum - catching the Devil in the backfield for a 5 yard loss on first down. A second down snap over the QBs head was recovered by the Devils, but downed by the Highlanders at the 15 for a 10 yard loss. The 3rd down pass attempt was well covered by #1 Offer leading to 4th down. The punt was downed by the Devils at their 48 yard line for the Highlanders to start their first offensive possession.
The “O” began with 8:42 in the first quarter, starting the drive with a counter to the left slot, #6 Tillotson winding his way through defenders to the 27 yard line for a 21 yard gain. Great blocking down field by Dempster and Battershell. A pitch to Humbert for 5 yards followed by another counter to the right by Tillotson and the Highlanders were on the board in 3 plays. The extra point was just off, but the Highlanders had the lead, 6 to 0 on the 16 yard run by Tillotson.
The kickoff was returned to the Devil’s 32 yard line, before #4 Northcutt brought him down. The Lake Fenton team came out passing on the first play of their second possession, connecting for an apparent first down. The Highlander D brought out the Hammer with Humbert tackling the receiver from behind, knocking the ball out for #20 Kania to recover. First and 10 Highlanders at the Devils 45 yard line.
The Adams’ offense started their second possession with a counter from the right slot, #24 Battershell, taking the ball to the 27 for 18 yards. #35 Sacco for a counter to the right for 4 yards. The next 2 plays led to no gain as the Devils dug in to force a 4th down. Tillotston, Quarterbacking from the pistol, took the snap, launching a well timed 24 yard pass to the streaking receiver, Benny Dempster as he crossed the goal line for the score. The point after attempt was good, Highlanders 13, Blue Devils 0 with 3:00 left in the first quarter.
The Devils’ third offensive possession began at their 20 after the kick return team did another great job on coverage. #53 Kawa pounced on the ball carrier for a short gain. A second down run had the D Line wall off the back as he was swarmed by Humbert, Kania, Battershell and Dempster. The 3rd down pass attempt was futile as the Highlanders cut off the QB rollout by Kawa, and then #89 Tsamaidis wrapped up his ankles while the backers collapsed forcing a loss of 2 and a fourth down. The punt ended the quarter. Adams 13, Lake Fenton 0.
Adams O got to work from the Devils 41 yard line to begin the second quarter. 2 dives up the middle by Humbert led to a 3rd and short. On third down, a counter from the right slot running left led to a 18 yard gain by Battershell. First and 10 from the 11 - Tillotson at the left slot, slips defenders for the 11 yard score. The point after is good. Adams 20 - Lake Fenton 0 with 10:13 in the half.
The Devils fourth offensive possession began at their 23 yard line after another solid kick return coverage by the Highlanders. A first down run for a short gain, stopped by Kawa, #35 Sacco and Humbert. An incomplete 2nd down pass led to 3rd and 6. The Devils’ QB connected for a 9 yard gain to the Lake Fenton 38. On first down, a pass to the same route, the Devil receiver slipped pass the coverage to take the ball to the Adam’s 30 yard line. On first down, another pass attempt deep down field drew a pass interference call on the Highlander defender. The Devils attempted to run on first down from the Adams 16, but the D line held and Humbert made another tackle for a loss. The Devils went to the air on 2 and 11, finding a receiver in the end zone for a score from 17 yards. The point after attempt was blocked by Humbert, leaving the score: Adams 20 - Lake Fenton 6 with 7:25 left in the half.
Sacco brought the kick up to the Adams 40 yard line to start the fourth Adams possession with good field position. A dive for positive yardage by Humbert, followed by a 2nd down counter for a loss, leading to a 3rd down pass attempt. The pass was tipped, eventually caught by the Lake Fenton Devils for an interception at the Adams 41 with 5:30 in the half.
The Highlanders were motivated for a defensive stop - great contain by Battershell on the rollout pass attempt led to Humbert wrapping up the QB for a 9 yard loss. A dive attempt was met by Kawa collapsing the B gap for no gain. 3rd and long led to an incomplete pass. The ensuing punt was caught at the Adams’ 14 and returned to the 30 by Tillotson for a 16 yard gain. On first down, Battershell took the counter to the 43 for a 13 yard gain. A dive, QB keeper, and counter led to a fourth and long pass attempt, and QB scramble - getting caught a yard short of the first down. 4 straight pass attempts led to a turnover on downs with the Highlander’s taking over with 0:36 left in the half.
The Highlander Freshmen made the most of the opportunity. A counter of 24 yards by Battershell to the 20 yard line of Lake Fenton was given additional yards for the undisciplined hit out of bounds by the Devils. The Highlanders find themselves with first and goal from the 10, scoring on second down with the pass from Tillotson to Battershell for the score. The point after was good. Adams 27 - Lake Fenton 6, with 0:07 left in the half.
The Highlanders received the second half kick off, Battershell returning the kick to the Devils’ 40 yard line. A counter, dive and quick pitch brought the ball to the 32 yard line for a fourth and 2. The dive on 4th came up inches short, turning the ball over on downs to the Devils. On first down, a strong run was met with a stronger D - and while Humbert tackled the running back, Offer stripped the ball and #11 Straub recovered at the Lake Fenton 39. The next 4 plays led to Adams turning the ball over on downs at the Lake Fenton 33 yard line.
The Devils started with a pass attempt, a dive for a short gain, and then on 3rd down, the ball was snapped over the quarterbacks head. A scramble for the ball led to Battershell coming up with it at the visiting teams 24 yard line with 4:53 in the 3rd quarter. After 3 short gains, the Highlanders had a 4th and 2 at the 18 yard line. A QB option pitch was executed well with Humbert taking the pitch for a first down at the 7 and yard line. First and goal, and the Devils stepped up their defense as the quarter ended on a 3rd and goal from the 9. End of the 3rd quarter, Adams 27 - Lake Fenton 6.
The fourth quarter started with a pass attempt in the end zone, unfortunately the ball was intercepted by the Devils for a touchback. On first down, late in the game, the Devils came out passing, completing for a gain up to the 40. A face mask on the stop brought the ball up to the Adam’s 45. The Adams D pressured the Devil QB for an incomplete pass, followed by a sack by Sacco on 2nd down. Facing a 3rd and long from their own 49 - a false start pushed them back to their 44. On fourth down, they were stopped again by the Highlanders, setting up another possession in Devils’ territory.
The Highlander’s appeared to stall out on the following drive facing a 3rd and 12. The O was not done for the day. Tillotson connected for his 3rd touchdown pass with a strike to Battershell running up the seam and into the end zone for 47 yards. The point after was good. Adams 34 - Lake Fenton 6 with 6:51 left in the game.
The Devils were unable to cleanly handle the kick off. The heavy pursuit of the Adams Kick return team caught the returner at the 8 yard line. After several pass completions, and shifty running by the Devil receivers, the ball was up to the 40 yard line of Lake Fenton. A pass deep down field was snagged by the Adam’s free safety, Tillotson, making an acrobatic catch. The game ended with the Adams second offense getting an opportunity for live game experience as the clock ran out. Final score: Adams Highlanders 34 - Lake Fenton Devils 6.
