Pecos, TX — The Fabens Wildcats came out strong against the Pecos Eagles! Firing on all cylinders they marched down the field on 5 plays for 49 yards. After an apparent TD was called short and the following two plays the Wildcats were penalized and the drive stalled. Later in the second quarter the Wildcats cut the lead to 7-6 after a great drive capped off by a Miguel Delgado rushing touchdown. But after 3 turnovers in 4 plays on offense the Wildcats found themselves trailing 31-6 at halftime.
The Wildcats did not back down. After stopping Pecos on their first drive of the second half, Miguel Delgado ripped off a 15 yard run then connected with Steven Nunez on a 55 yard pass down the sideline and set up the Cats first and goal just inside the 10 yard line. Delgado then hit pay dirt once again and after a failed 2 point play the Wildcats trailed 31-12.
The Wildcats really dug in on defense led by Belshe and the Urrutia brothers. Early in the 4th quarter Drew Belshe stunted and hit the quarterback which popped the ball free and Derreck Navar scooped it up and ran it back 74 yards for the touchdown! Anthony Rivera connected on the PAT and the Cats trailed 31-19. Another stalled drive for Pecos and the Wildcats drove down to the Eagle 25 yard line but then the turnover bug got them again and Pecos recovered the Fabens fumble.
Knowing they needed stops the defense dug in once again and got the stop. Wildcats went into hurry-up and drove down the field on 4 Erick Ortiz completions to Luis Mena, Miguel Delgado and Derreck Navar. Miguel Delgado punched it in for his 3rd TD of the night cutting the lad to 31-26 with less than two minutes to go. After a failed onside kick try. The Wildcats once again played hard on defense but after a first down and the Wildcats exhausting their 3 timeouts Pecos' tough run game got the second first down the needed to seal the game and the Cats came up just short.
After a long road trip the Wildcats will return home to face the 2-2 Lamesa Golden Tornadoes on Friday September 24th at 6:00 pm MST.
