Carterville charges out as the gun goes off for the start of the Varsity Girls race
West Frankfort, IL — Carterville Lions were in action this past Thursday, Sept 12, at the West Frankfort Redbird Invitational. The varsity girls team started their race conservatively, but by the one mile mark were well in control. Molly Robertson claimed the honors winning the race in 17:57. She was followed by teammates Lyla Seaman who took 2nd place and Freshman Laney Sambursky in 4th. The other scoring Carterville runners, Dani Williamson and Marcela Wood, didn’t mess around and were 9th and 10th overall. Lillian Carsrud and Leina Jaimet rounded out the varsity squad with a 21st and 25th finish respectively. The Lions tallied 26 points for their 1st place finish. DuQuoin was 2nd with 91 points. West Frankfort grabbed 3rd place with 110 points followed by Herrin with 150.
On the boys side, Carterville battled against Bluford Weber for 1st place but came up just 6 points short and finished 2nd overall. August Anderson led the Carterville team with 16:02 finish time, good for 2nd place. Then the pack of Scott, Samples, Webb, and Beyke finished 11th, 13th, 15th, and 19th place to round out the scoring runners. Nick Korte (29th) and Jack Robertson (34th) completed the varsity squad.
In the Open Races, Nick Wilhelm won the boys race. Liam Sylwester and Jake Wilhelm were close behind and were 2nd and 3rd for Carterville.
Landry Crain won the girls race, followed by teammates Alissa Ruiz and Lexi Watts who placed 2nd and 3rd overall.
Carterville will be heading to Olney next Saturday to compete in the Olney Invitational.
