Hawks wrap up summer competition going 4-2 at FIPB 7 on 7
Varsity/JV Boise Optimist 7 on 7
Boise, ID — It's been a long journey since our bus broke down on the way to Utah in June. From BYU, to U of U, to BSU, to Madison, to Centennial, to Emmett, to Wish bowl (Meridian), to McCall, to FIPB in Boise. We have played a lot of competitive football this summer. I have seen great growth in the confidence and swagger of our players and yet we have a ways to go when adversity hits.
We earned the #3 seed this weekend and won games against Nampa Christian, Eagle JV, Kuna, and Nampa with losses coming to Capital and Boise. The Hawks had some great moments and made some great plays. I think our passing game should be competent enough to give us a chance to win games this year. We also had great representation at the lineman challenge with our lineman outpacing other teams in the bench press and showing we have strength to compete with anyone. JV got some experience in the tournament which will surely payoff this season and in years to come.
One thing we talked about after the tournament; we have enough this year in terms of players, talent, and ability to be a good team. What will determine the outcome of our season will be how many guys make the transition from taking up space and doing a job to owning the job they are given and holding it down. For some the transition comes early and easily for others not so much.
It's easy to think some are born with the it factor while some are not, but that is not true. The it factor comes when you fully invest and commit. When you realize there is no one else to do the job. When you get beat on a play and respond with your best effort on the next. When you are determined to give your all no matter the outcome and understand adversity is an opportunity for heroism. Heroes see things through to the end. Win or lose.
Seniors seem to grasp the urgency required to succeed because of a sense of finality, but even being a senior is no guarantee to make the transition. We deserve to be confident because we have outworked our opponents. We deserve to have swagger because we are experienced. No one will give us anything, but we will get so much more out of this season if we commit to our duty with a greater sense of urgency and determination to fight to the end.
Summer competitive season is complete and was successful. The fall season is just around the corner. August 7 will be here before you know it. 35 days to kick off. There is still time to get better. Go Hawks!
