FULLERTON, Calif.- The Royals continued their homestand hosting the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University for their second game of the HIU Thanksgiving Classic Tuesday evening. Ana Resendiz (JR/Ontario, CA) poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the Royals (9-0, 2-0 GSAC) to an 83-56 victory over the Golden Eagles, the Royals' ninth consecutive win to open up the 2021-22 season.
The Eagles were eager to put a stop to the Royals' eight-game win streak scoring the first five points of the game. The Royals' offense slowly took control and a three-pointer from Casey Fust (SO/Brea, CA) put the Royals ahead. With a layup from Shiane Talley (SO/Rialto, CA), followed by Ana Resendiz's first of eight three-pointers, HIU was able to gain the momentum they needed leading the Golden Eagles 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles were able to stay on pace with the Royals offense and gained a two-point lead before Jeanette Fine (FR/Las Vegas, NV) made a jump shot to tie the game at 27-27. Resendiz made another go-ahead three-pointer to fire up the entire Royals squad. After an HIU foul, LSU took a one-point lead to close out the second frame and the Royals trailed by one, 34-33, at the half.
A firing three-point shot from Casey Fust gave the Royals a two-point lead to begin the third frame. The Royals offense became too hot to handle for the Golden Eagles as they scored seven points within one minute to give themselves a six-point lead. Shalissa Jarrett continued to be consistent on offense and made back to back jump-shots to force an LSU timeout. The Royals offense put together 23 points to gain a 56-44 lead over the Golden Eagles at the end of the third quarter.
The Golden Eagles struggled to answer back, as the Royals offense continued to pour in the points. The Royals advantage grew to 24 points on a jump shot from Shiane Talley in the fourth quarter. Ana Resendiz was a spark plug for the Royals scoring a career-high 27 points, shooting 8 for 9 from beyond the arc to secure the win with a final score of 83-56.
Rhianne Omori (JR/Honolulu, HI) finished with 13 points and four assists, and Shiane Talley added 12 with six boards and five assists. Jeanette Fine led the Royals with eight assists, while Casey Fust led the Royals with eight boards on the night. The Royals shot 54.5% from the field and an impressive 56.5% from beyond the arc, sinking thirteen triples as a team.
The Royals will travel up north to take on Menlo College and William Jessup University after the Thanksgiving break to continue conference play.
